Local league on indefinite suspension as government dissolves GFA

The local league is on an indefinite suspension following the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) by President Akufo-Addo.

According to the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiama, the dissolution of the league also means “all other activities related to the FA have been suspended until further notice.”

“We are going to put in place structures to ensure that we get in touch with FIFA and CAF to have a dialogue to get normalcy in place,” he told Joy News’ Evans Mensah on Newsnight, Thursday.

He said government has had to take this action because of the issues that have emerged from the Anas investigation.

President Akufo-Addo dissolved GFA after a private investigative company, Tiger Eye PI, documented rampant bribery and corruption in the administration of the game.

This comes 24 hours after the public screening of the documentary at the Accra International Conference Center reduced the Association to ridicule and severe trolling on social media.

“We believe that for us to have the football that all Ghanaians cherish, let us dissolve the GFA as it is now as it is not fit for purpose so we can get back up when we have a proper structure in place.”

He said government wants to ensure that the people with integrity and capability will be put in place to run the affairs of Ghana Football.

“There is a roadmap in place that we are going to follow which is going to involve all stakeholders to ensure that we have the kind of management that can stand the test of time,” he said.

According to him, Ghanaians who are passionate football lovers have been yearning for the proper thing to be done after the fiasco at Brazil 2014 World Cup.

He justified government’s intervention saying the calls by Ghanaians cannot be ignored anymore so the president had to act adding “we are making an intervention in the game of football to save it.”

“We want to put in place management of the game who will be concerned about the supporters and how people go through pains to manage their clubs,” he stated.

According to him, for football fans who have their emotions on their shoulders, it does not make sense to go to the stadium knowing the game is already predetermined.

“Can we run the league now, when all the referees have been implicated?” he quizzed.
