Bawku: 5 neatly dressed smock wearers arrested for carrying guns, knives – Police explain Fugu ban

Police in the Upper East Region have explained the rationale behind the ban on the wearing of smock in the Bawku Township by the Regional Security Council.

Yesterday, a press statement signed by Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu indicated that the directive was to take immediate effect.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Neat FM monitored by Mynewsgh.com this morning, the Upper East Regional PRO of the Ghana Police Service, ASP Davis Fianko Okyere explained that the directive had become necessary because the number of violent crimes involving persons who wore smocks was on the ascendency.

He said in the past few days, up to 5 individuals arrested in the municipality for violent armed attacks on opponents and innocent citizens were found to have been very well dressed but carried their weapons under the cover of their smocks.

The Bawku Township has also been put under a 4 PM to 6 AM curfew by the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery upon the advice of the Regional Security Council.<br>Sporadic gunshots were fired in the Bawku Township on Tuesday.
