Koforidua: Scores Of Police Officers Evicted By Landlady

Scores of Police Personnel with the Koforidua Divisional and District Police Command in the Eastern region are being evicted by a landlady of a compound house that has served as rented accommodation for the men and women in uniform for many years.

The House popularly known as Police House is located at Challey Junction in Anlo Town near the Eastern Regional office of Vodafone Ghana.

The landlady has served notice to the occupants to vacate the house having offered it on sale at a negotiable price of  Ghc500,000.

Anxiety has since engulfed the Police officers occupying the rooms with their families following the eviction notice served.

The affected police officers are therefore searching for rooms to rent in desperation.

Inadequate accommodation for Police officers in Ghana is a huge challenge facing the law enforcement agency.

The Police barrack at the Koforidua Central Police station for instance has woefully inadequate rooms to accommodate a significant number of Police officers and their families.

The small-sized chamber and hall rooms of the Gold Coast building are too small for families to occupy but officers have no choice but to improvise.

Some officers are forced to park their items in the corridor.

The police officers and their families at the barracks share toilet and bathrooms facilities that are detached.

Owing to this challenge, most of the officers are renting accommodations outside barracks making quick mobilization during emergencies difficult.

The accommodation challenges facing Ghana Police Service has existed for many decades with no end in sight.

Governments have not shown commitment to supporting the police service to resolve this crisis which has a direct effect on effective policing.

It is trite knowledge and practices globally that, Police officers are accommodated in barracks for the purpose of easy mobilization during emergency security challenges.

Exemptions are however given under reasonable conditions.
