Residents at New Abirem have demonstrated against Newmont Company.
The aggrieved residents claimed the company has refused to heed the agreement that was signed between them and the chiefs of the New Abirem before they [Company] started their operations.
They want the company to employ locals as stipulated in the agreement.
Asamoah Boateng, who is a youth leader from Abirem North district in the Eastern region of south Ghana, said their concerns must be addressed by authorities or they will continue to stage demonstrations against the company.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he alleged that the MCE, Chiefs and opinion leaders are aware of the issues raised.
He claimed they have also held several meetings with the company, but all efforts to get them to address the issues have proved futile.
“Our chief, the district chief executive and all the leaders in the district are aware of what Newmont Company are doing”.
He also voiced out his displeasure on how the Newmont Company is disrespecting the chiefs and authorities in the area.
