Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament is a ‘major’ setback for Nana Addo – Sammi Awuku admits

National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sammi Awuku has admitted that the turn of events of the Speaker of Parliament Election is a setback for the party.

Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye who was chosen by the NPP’s National Council to be voted for as Speaker of Parliament for a second term failed to sail through after some members of the party voted for veteran politician Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin who was nominated by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr. Awuku who was reacting to the issues of Thursday dawn on an Accra-based radio station monitored by MyNewsGh.com, said though things did not go as expected, he expects Mr. Bagbin to be fair, firm and not mischievous just because he belongs to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“The NPP is not perturbed, we are not scared about this whole arrangement. Yes it is a temporary setback; we will re-organize ourselves, reshape it and shake ourselves up and deliver in parliament.

I don’t see the Honorable Alban Bagbin as mischievous character. This is someone who has distinguished himself in Parliament for almost three decades”, he pointed out.

“To the admiration of all, if he continues with the way he started, I am convinced he will proved even his skeptics wrong and his fiercest critics wrong that he is there to do the job of the Ghanaian people, not to do the job of a partisan group”, he further said.
